Check out the interesting results from the Octanorm Survey

What happens when you ask more than 100 exhibition industry suppliers for their views on the state of the exhibition industry and the challenges they face? Credit Crunch, Climate Change, Congestion Charge; you’d suppose that these Hi Cs would figure at the top. The results of a recent survey undertaken by Octanorm in partnership with Exhibiting Show provide a fascinating insight into the attitudes, challenges and perceptions of exhibition industry suppliers revealing what they regard as the real challenges and their view of their prospects for the future.

Hi Sue,
The results are really interesting- we've been talking about them a lot in the office.
It's incredibly important to commission research into industry attitudes. We can all benefit from taking a look at our business practices and can also learn from the views of our colleagues and peers.

Very strange results in that survey - a lot of the respondents feel 'going green' is important and impactful, yet they don't know why or bother to require suppliers to provide green products/solutions? Only 18% ask their suppliers about THEIR environmental policy.

Over 60% have an environmental policy, but not because clients are demanding it. Instead, it is because it is "Important for the business to be environmentally responsible."

Also, how can over 80% do business outside UK in 0, 10, 25 and 75% of their business? Those numbers make no sense. That's over 400%!

It seems to me that the discrepancy between motive and action is incredibly revealing and exactly what one would expect around an issue with as profound implications for our industry as environmental sustainability.

Companies have a vague sense that the issue is important so they feel they should make changes - but what and how? Since they are not being called upon to change by clients there's no competitive advantage and no need for them to drive changes through their own supply chain. Hence the seeming contradictions in the survey.

We'd probably all like to be greener - but only a combination of our own actions, legislation and education will drive real change.
